Zack Lober's No Fill3r

This will be our LAST Lockdown Session for now! Please join us once more with the debut of this incredible trio.

NO FILL3R is a new trio project from double bassist Zack Lober featuring trumpeter Suzan Veneman and drummer Sun-Mi Hong. The group was created to explore the compositional and creative possibilities of a minimalist ensemble, free of chordal instruments. The music of NO FILL3R is rooted in the spirit of the Jazz and Improvised traditions while also drawing inspiration from the contemporary sounds of Rock, Hip Hop and Electronic music.

Now based in the Netherlands after 3 years in Boston and 11 years in NYC, Zack has worked under bandleaders David Binney, Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris, Jamie Baum, Chet Doxas and Ingrid Jensen among many others. He is also a co-founder of the critically acclaimed jazz groups “The Story” and “Landline”. NO FILL3R is a culmination of those years of experience and represents a major step forward for Zack Lober as a bandleader and composer.

Born and raised in In-Cheon, Korea; Sun-Mi Hong has a unique perspective of life after her last seven years in Amsterdam. With a signature of rooted groove in combination with well-tempered outbursts, Sun-mi has placed herself strongly in the Dutch jazz scene. She is the winner of the Dutch Jazz Competition 2018 and the 2nd Prize of the Getxo International Jazz Competition 2017 (Sun-Mi Hong Quintet), She will be releasing a new album with her quintet called ‘Second Page: A Self-Strewn Portrait’ in March 2020.

Suzan Veneman has established her skills as a versatile trumpeter with deep understanding of the jazz language to audiences across the Netherlands. After finishing her master’s degree in the USA, she is back on Dutch soil fulfilling her role as a jazz trumpet player with her warm and melodic sound. Her compositions were recognized and appreciated by the Jazz Comp Graz Big Band Composers Competition in Austria (2017) and the ASMAC Big Band composers and arranger’s competition in LA (2014). Suzan started her own jazz quintet in 2019, where she is combining her prolific composing skills and playful improvisation.

Daan Herweg Trio

For this edition of the Lockdown Sessions fellow initiator Daan Herweg will play with his piano trio with fellow musicians Cord Heineking (Bass) and Jasper van Hulten (Drums) .

It will be the seventh concert of an online series broadcasted live from Daan Herweg’s own Key Element Music Studio in Amsterdam. The series started as an alternative jazz programming for Dutch jazzclubs and their audience during the corona lockdown. Even though we are coming out of lockdown it is still complicated to organise jazz concerts.

Daan Herweg is a musician that has been around for 20 years on the dutch jazz and general music scene. Primarily he is a jazzpianist but he is equally well equipped as a composer/producer in pop music. Cord Heineking is a much sought after bass player known for his intense lyricism. Jasper van Hulten is a highly sensitive musician with a broad palet. During the corona-crisis Daan has worked on some new material that the trio will be glad to perform.

The New York Second ft. Teus Nobel

We are proud to present The New York Second ft. Teus Nobel for the 6th edition of the Lockdown Sessions.

Bandleader and pianist Harald Walkate is also a JazzConnect member, who co-produce this series of concerts. The New York Second is a jazz quartet that allows him to present his own music, but also enables him to surround himself with incredible young talent and guests. For today he brings his bassist Marijn van de Ven and guest trumpeter Teus Nobel. They will be playing music of the recent CD ‘Emergo’ (March 2020) in a unique and intimate trio setting.

“The future of jazz has risen” is what Jazzism wrote about Teus Nobel. With contributions on over 25 CDs in just over 10 years of his career he is a Dutch musician not to be missed. An award-winning player, performing his own music a.o. at the North Sea Jazz, and until recently touring worldwide with pianist Jef Neve in duo.
